Tonight, March 1st, metal fans from across the state of Wisconsin gathered at The Sylvee in Madison. Headliner Nothing More was accompanied by Catch Your Breath, Archers, and Doobie, a strong lineup that ensured there was something for everyone in attendance. The doors opened at 5 pm, and before the opening band took the stage, the venue was nearly packed to the brim with attendees, which pointed towards a very successful evening.
The opener, Doobie, took the stage, and the crowd fell quiet, most discovering this artist for the first time. As he kicked off his set, this Columbus native did not disappoint, capturing the audience's attention with his unique sound. His blend of metal and rap, amongst other genres, culminates in a raw and honest sound, much like the lyrics he sings. This independent artist may have started the night unknown to the crowd, but by the end, he had everyone coming together to say “Fuck you” to their exes and leaving with new fans.
Next to take the stage was Archers, a Madison, Wisconsin-grown band, making tonight's show a hometown performance for them. Leading us into a heavier genre, they opened with “Made for Love”, instantly bringing high energy to the stage, which began to pulsate through the crowd. As a surprise for those in attendance, they performed a newly released song, “The Dirt,” which was very well received by the fans, who began to crowd-surf over each other's heads, creating a circle pit towards the back of the crowd. Lead singer Nathanael Pulley took a moment to reflect on the band's journey, sharing what it meant to be back on stage in Madison, becoming slightly emotional while discussing it. But, despite the emotions, the band continued, hyping up the crowd and warming them up for the following acts.
While the temperature continued to rise and the crowd became more dense, there was a low rumbling from the speakers as Catch Your Breath took over the stage. You could feel the energy levels jump when hearing the melody of “Savages”, their opening song. Not able to leave Archers the only ones with a surprise for their fans. Catch Your Breath also performed their new single “Dark”. They also played popular songs “21 Gun Salute” and “Dial Tone”, the crowd singing along to every word with enthusiasm. To end their set, they challenged their fans, informing them that they have been having a competition to see which city can have the best crowd surfing. The crowd accepted that challenge, continuously passing other fans over their heads throughout the entirety of “Shame On Me”.
.
Finally, the palpable anticipation broke as the headlining, Nothing More, conquered the stage. They had the crowd moving, moshing, and mesmerized for their entire 12-song set. Starting with “House On Sand” and ending with “This Is The Time”, but before their iconic drum solo performance. An exciting, energizing, and wonderfully chaotic display of drum talent from not just the drummer, Ben Anderson, but also singer Jonny Hawkins. By the end of the show, everyone, band and fans alike, were drenched in sweat, but there were nothing but smiles everywhere you looked. Nothing More has curated an exciting and diverse lineup for this tour, and it definitely works. If you haven't already bought tickets to one of the shows for this tour, do yourself a favor and grab one before they're gone. It will be a night to remember.
