Mother May I
Song Review: Blood Mother by The Funeral Portrait
CONTIBUTING AUTHOR Danielle
With a hard rocking groove that is an outstanding follow up to Suffocate City, Blood Mother has a more personal feel to the meaning in the lyrics. With references to addiction and religion, Blood Mother encompasses the pain and desperation of substance abuse, however, it can be about any type of addiction – with a progression from love to an obsession, to becoming your god, your controller. Lee Jennings’ vocals are the perfect complement to the propulsive rhythm. It is an unforgettable and fun sounding tune sure to make you want to get up and dance, but is a juxtaposition with lyrics emanating threat and danger. The chorus is catchy and the refrain, "I'm not a believer" is sure to get the crowd singing along.
The music video for the track perfectly meshes the religious undertones and violent symbolism that The Funeral Portrait is known for. The “Blood Mother” is terrifying in her resplendent glory donning a crown, demon claws, and facemask made of red skulls. Her look may also be a nod to In This Moment’s Maria Brink, with her spidery fingers, long blond hair, and white robe. She is something of our nightmares - and simultaneously the demon of our dreams.
When asked about the song, Jennings stated, "This southern-fried riff machine brings a low, pulsing energy to the record. It harks on modern medication and the fear of risking losing your personality and sense of self once prescribed."
The Funeral Portrait is really knocking it out of the park in 2024. I can't wait to listen to the full album, Greetings from Suffocate City - out September 13, 2024.
