Emerging from the dark, she steps into the light, singing her single “TALK SHIT!”, and the crowd immediately begins singing along. It's hard not to groove along to the catchy and relatable songs, becoming fully entranced by her angelic and soothing voice. Her songs “DEAR READER”, and “WRITTEN BY A WOMAN” are songs easily attractive to fellow readers, with these and many of her songs from her 2 EPS “Character Development” and “Dear Reader”. She uses many references to literature to beautifully describe so many things that many other women deal with, like heartbreak, anger, and discovering oneself. She treated the crowd to a new and unreleased track, “Frakenstein”, which everyone is now eagerly waiting for. Ending her set with an acoustic version of her hit “ALICE”. Finally, she emerges in a light pink silk dress, which she made herself, seemingly the antithesis of the lyrics she sang. The excitement was palpable throughout the room, and it was reflected in the performance on the stage. You could see the joy and passion for what she does in Ella’s face as she danced around the stage, never missing a beat in her vocals. She picked up her acoustic guitar to sing “Cupid,” a song written and dedicated to her sister after a heartbreak, getting emotional while speaking about her younger sister and her love for her. The next song, “Always the Artist,” also came with an emotional introduction as Ella spoke about the difficulties of being an artist and the emotions that come with it. Before she could start singing, before her eyes, a sea of hearts emerged: “You're always our artist and muse.” Shocked by the unexpected gesture of love from her fans, her eyes welled with tears as the realization of what was happening and what the signs said set in. To end the show, Ella closed with “It’s Not Real”, but before she said goodnight for the evening, she reminded the crowd that this is the time where she pretends to disappear, and they chant loudly for an encore, and she comes back out to surprise them. The people did not disappoint as they began loudly and fervently changing “Encore! Encore!”, and when she returned to the stage, they cheered as loudly as they would have if the return were a surprise. Finally, the song that went viral, “I Like You Best,” was the perfect high-energy closer to this wonderful show. Flawlessly moving into their popular “Generational Psycho”, the band put on an energetic and captivating performance full of their usual stage antics of flirting, notably between singer Lee Jennings and bassist Robert Weston, and TFP fans seemed to be eating it up. During “Voodoo Doll,” the crowd lit up with their phones as Lee, with his own light, and fans held them up, swaying them side to side, following the singer's lead. Their 8-song set included a good mix of songs from both albums, including “Fallout”, “Numb”, and “Gone or Staying” from their EP release “Paper Hearts”, and new hits like “Parasite”, “Gravity”, “Stuck in my Head”, and “Static”. Dominating the stage with a big opening of “NWO”, they came out making an impression on the crowd. While it seemed many members of the crowd were not prepared for the head that this band was bringing, by the end of their set, they were awake and ready, and quite possibly sweaty. Getting the crowd pumped with their single “Violent Nature”, the floor began to break into factions: the crowd-surfers and the circle pit moshers, and I am not sure which was bigger. The band continued to impress when drummer Gabe Helguera ripped out an impressive and heavy drum solo before performing, as the singer Eric Vanlerberghe said: “the most difficult song to perform”, which happened to be “God”. This band not only kept the crowd entertained musically, but singer Eric and guitarist/ vocalist Dylan Bowman kept you engaged between songs with their banter and off-the-wall comments. The emotions ebbed and flowed through the entire show as the crowd felt every lyric, chord, and beat. Three Days Grace gave everyone in attendance everything they could have wanted from a performance and more, leaving every single person on a high that is sure to be difficult to top any time soon. Headlining their own show, Beartooth packed the Eagles Ballroom of The Rave venue to the brim. Though she may be small, she is definitely mighty. This vocalist is a powerhouse of screams from deeper gutturals to brain-tickling shrieks, and everything in between; she lays it all on the line. The set was a surprise of unreleased tracks, “Bad Exchanges”, “Make It Out”, “Hell Hath”, and “Shallow Grave”. Despite being unfamiliar with the tracks, the crowd made sure to keep that hidden, moving along and banging their heads to the beat. Even though she claimed to be under the weather, Showing Teeth showed up for everyone there, fooling us all as she commanded the stage. For songs, like “Labyrinth” and “RIP”, that the audience was familiar with, they made sure to step up and sing loudly, giving the singer a break and returning the energy she was giving to them. The band definitely made an impression, as the merch line was just as long, if not longer than Beartooth's after their set was complete. Caleb strode out, dominating the stage with a confidence that could be felt through the entire venue. Opening the show with “Might Love Myself”, it set the tone for this show and perfectly introduced the new era that the band debuted when they released their latest single, “Free”, which also made the setlist tonight. The fourteen-song setlist came in strong and never once fell flat, the crowd eating up every second of the performance. The crowd fell silent as Caleb initiated a call and answer from the crowd, who did not disappoint, screaming their return passionately back to the band. The packed venue shifted and swayed to the music. At the center of the crowd, metal-show tradition kicked in: a mosh pit opened, while fans along the sides surfed overhead. And as a true fan loving artists do, when it seemed that there was an issue in the crowd, Caleb stopped the show, checking in on the crowd and making sure that the issue was addressed, reminding everyone to take care of one another. After ensuring everyone was ready to continue the show, they picked back up without ever skipping a beat. As the lights dimmed and the band left the stage, the volume only increased as the mass of fans chanted “Beartooth! Beartooth!”, not ready to say goodbye to the night yet. Just as you thought the chanting was hopeless, blue lights illuminated the crowd as Caleb ran back out on stage, giving everyone what they wanted: an encore. To truly end the show, the band played their classic “Riptide”. Other members wear black cloth masks, concealing their true identities, are known as Heist (guitar), Vice (drummer), and Protest (bassist). Opening their set with their single “Fearless”, the band meandered out to the stage, with the vocalist appearing behind a podium with the band's insignia in red neon light on the front, giving the illusion that he is addressing the audience in a political forum. The reviews from the crowd seemed mixed; some knew the music and sang along enthusiastically, while others seemed bored. Was this out of genuine disinterest or unfamiliarity with the band? That’s a question I can not answer. As a surprise for those in attendance, they performed a newly released song, “The Dirt,” which was very well received by the fans, who began to crowd-surf over each other's heads, creating a circle pit towards the back of the crowd. Lead singer Nathanael Pulley took a moment to reflect on the band's journey, sharing what it meant to be back on stage in Madison, becoming slightly emotional while discussing it.
