We Certainly Are in Kansas

Concert Review: Counterparts

CONTRIBUTING AUTHOR: KJH CONCERTS

In the small town of Lawrence, Kansas, Counterparts, with support from Pain of Truth, Malevolence, and Foreign Hands played in a small venue named The Granada. The venue may have been small, but that didn’t stop anyone from yelling their heart out at the screams and hard bass drops that filled the concert hall

Foreign Hands threw the crowd back into their nostalgia era with 2000s metalcore sounds, soft singing voices, and harsh screams that translate strong emotion through their words. The crowd got very involved with each band since there was no barricade, increasing the stage diving and dancing with the bands with each song.

Malevolence, all the way from the United Kingdom, was having a blast on stage singing with the audience and hauling people to the stage to jump back into the crowd. While their music videos create a story, they wasted no time getting straight into their hard riffs and intense beats when performing.

Pain of Truth rallied the crowd together when it came to the mosh pit. Encouraging kids to experience their first pits as well as be fully integrated into the hardcore crowd, the band joined the audience when starting the pit back up again when there was a pause. Not letting a setback cut any songs, they finished their set with more vigor and enthusiasm than at the start. They immersed themselves in the crowd, singing with them, giving them the mic to take over a few verses, and joining them to enjoy Counterparts after they were done.

Counterparts delivered a much calmer, but equally hardcore performance than their openers. Debuting their newest album on this tour, Heaven Let Them Die, the background setup was ethereal compared to the hardest vocals seen out of Brendan thus far. Pain, deceit, and revenge are conveyed through the music, translating the raw emotion of each word into heartbreaking lyrics.

Starting and ending with intensity, the Heaven Let Them Die Tour put their mark on The Granada for years to come.
