Song Review: Confessions by Lifeboats

Floral shirts and hardcore punk might not seem well matched, but to Lifeboats out of Lyon, France, it defines a new era. The band’s newest single, ‘Confessions’, explores the struggle of balancing what we’ve experienced with the hope that it won’t consume us entirely.
‘Confessions’ takes the listener through a deep dive into feelings that are impossible to ignore. Lucas sings about the desire to “leave it inside / but I can’t stop, ‘cause it’s my body and my blood.” Confronting parts of ourselves that have been shaped by hardship can be much easier said than done. The past can haunt us and separate us from who we wish to be. It takes courage to speak about the things we want to leave behind, and it can be even harder to admit how negative thoughts distort our self-perception.
Opening up about our struggles gives those we trust a front row seat to our pain. To trust is to be vulnerable. Despite the fear that can come with truth, the weight of our problems can be crushing. Letting the world see who we really are — imperfections and all — is freeing. ‘Confessions’ tells us that we may still have to deal with the demons in our heads: “I’ll never be saved from this torment”, but we have to remember to “refuse to fade away.”
Musically, the song’s guitar riffs and final verse are reminiscent of A Day to Remember with gritty lyrics intertwined with relentless hope. The drums and overall energy bring to mind a heavier version of Neck Deep.
Ultimately, it takes bravery to walk the edge between pain and hope. This song is a powerful musical representation of rising to your knees, spitting blood in the face of adversity, and carrying on.
