Has Reality Turned Virtual?

Song Review: Digital Numb by Dark Divine

CONTIBUTING AUTHOR Ash

In this age of peak technology, how can we resist getting fully absorbed in our phones and becoming mindless zombies, hypnotized by the allure of social media? Dark Divine explores this idea in their newest single, “Digital Numb.”

The complex beat is reminiscent of something that’d be heard in the background of a video game with vocals that switch from well placed screams to very clean melodies during the chorus. If the name is not a dead giveaway to the song’s theme, then the text tone that sounds at the beginning definitely is.

The lyrics take a deep dive into the tight leash of social media that leaves us craving the praise and instant gratification of likes and reposts. Lyrics such as “severed from every human connection / held by the throat” and “we know it isn’t real / we choose to believe” serve as a reminder of how digital media is not as innocent as it seems, pulling us farther away from real human interaction and faking certain aspects of our lives so others only see the version of ourselves we want them to, the version we believe is best.

The official visualizer for the song fits the lyrics perfectly, illustrating a nearly lifeless body wrapped in cords that hang the body and go down its throat, reflecting the lyric “swinging from the digital gallows / there’s no light behind those eyes.”

This is a classic Dark Divine song that both new and old fans will enjoy and serves as the perfect teaser for the release of Deadly Fun (Deluxe) this October.
